README file for AXIS IP Installer ================================= Release description ------------------- 2 Program name : AXIS IP Installer (AI ) Version number: 1.00 Release date : 20 October 1998 Description : Install AXIS-servers in IP (Internet Protocol) General information ------------------- The AXIS IP Installer program installs AXIS-servers in IP (Internet Protocol), ie sets an IP address. It can be done both for new and already installed servers. The program can also be used to find what IP address an already installed AXIS-server has (eg if it is forgotten). This IP (Internet Protocol) address is needed to reach the server from eg a web browser, FTP and ThinWizard. From within the AXIS IP Installer a web browser can also be launched with the (new) IP address for further installation and configuration. The program supports these AXIS-servers: - Print servers (all) - Camera servers (all) - CD-ROM servers (all, but firmware 5.0 or newer recommended) - Harddisk servers (all, but firmware 1.0 or newer recommended) - Scan servers (all, but firmware 1.y or newer recommended) (Requirement is that BOOTP and/or DHCP is enabled though, but that is true for all new and factory defaulted servers.) Servers behind routers can also be reached if the router is configured to let BOOTP/DHCP-broadcast requests pass through. The program runs under the following operating systems: - Windows 95 - Windows 98 - Windows NT 3.51 - Windows NT 4.0 - Windows NT 5.0 The program requires less than 1 MB memory on your hard disc and is sized to fit inside a 640x480 pixel small screen (eg laptop). User's manual ------------- Below is a brief description of how to use the program. Please read the Help file for more extensive information. Step 1. Restart your AXIS-server and then select it's serial number. The serial number can be found on the cover of your server. (It is the same number as the server's MAC-address.) If no serialnumbers are displayed, try restarting your AXIS- server by turning the power off and then on again. Step 2. Fill in the server's desired IP address. You can get the IP address from your network administrator. The IP address first three fields usually already have values. (These, at least the two first fields, should normally not be changed, else it means that you are setting an IP address outside your own network range. See more in the Help file.) Click the "Set IP address" button to set the IP address! You will then see dialogs that will inform you of what is happening. Within one minute (normally 20 seconds) the IP setting will be finished, otherwise a timeout will occur. Upon success the AXIS IP Installer program will state that or when a failure occurs a dialog will let you know what went wrong. What the different error messages are (and means) can be seen further down in this readme file and in the Help file. After setting one IP address you can enter a new one, for another of your AXIS-servers, if you like. Click the "Close" button when you are finished setting IP addresses. Messages - their meaning and cause ---------------------------------- Please notice that the F1 key can be used in all (error) dialogs to bring up a Help file page about that specific dialog. Please view the Help file for information about the different (error) dialogs (eg their meaning and cause). Log file -------- In the same directory that AXIS IP Installer is installed into there will be a logfile called "AXIS IP Installer.log". It can be used for diagnostics, eg for our support staff. (The file is emptied at every restart of the program, but if you have a very heavy network load, plan to have the program running for many hours and have very little hard disk space left you might want to consider unchecking the log file checkbox.) Technical information --------------------- The IP address is set using the protocols BOOTP and DHCP. However this is only temporarily (until restart of the AXIS-server), so afterwards the IP address is stored permanently using the protocols FTP and HTTP. If the IP address already exists or not is checked using the ICMP protocol. More information ---------------- If you need more information about AXIS IP Installer, or any of the AXIS Network Servers, please visit the AXIS WWW Home Page at http://www.axis.com/ . You will be able to download on-line manuals and the latest versions of the software utilities. Please enjoy the program! /Nicolas Rosengren, AXIS Client Software Team (C) AXIS Communications AB 1998
