Document version 1.00 AXIS IP Installer ================= The AXIS IP Installer program installs AXIS-servers in IP (Internet Protocol), ie sets an IP address. It can be done both for new and already installed servers. The program can also be used to find what IP address an already installed AXIS-server has (eg if it is forgotten). From within the AXIS IP Installer a web browser can also be launched with the (new) IP address for further installation and configuration. Release description =================== Version number: 1.51 Release date : 14 July 1999 New features: ------------- 1. Finds and displays current IP address for ALL Axis servers. General information ------------------- The program supports these AXIS-servers: - Print servers - Camera servers - Video servers - CD-ROM servers - Harddisk servers - Scan servers Requirement is that BOOTP and/or DHCP is enabled in the server. This is the fact for new servers and servers that are reset to factory default settings. Servers behind routers can also be reached if the router is configured to let BOOTP/DHCP-broadcast requests pass through. Hardware Requirements --------------------- AXIS IP Installer requires a PC with a 386 or higher processor and at least 4MB of RAM. It requires less than 1 MB memory on your hard disc and is sized to fit inside a 640x480 pixel small screen (eg laptop). Software Requirements --------------------- The program runs under the following operating systems: - Windows 95 - Windows 98 - Windows NT 3.51 - Windows NT 4.0 User's manual ============= Below is a brief description of how to use the program. Please read the Help file for more extensive information. Step 1. Restart your AXIS-server and then select it's serial number. The serial number can be found on the cover of your server. (It is the same number as the server's MAC-address.) If no serial numbers are displayed, try restarting your AXIS- server by turning the power off and then on again. Step 2. Fill in the server's desired IP address. You can get the IP address from your network administrator. The IP address first three fields usually already have values. (These, at least the two first fields, should normally not be changed, else it means that you are setting an IP address outside your own network range. See more in the Help file.) Click the "Set IP address" button to set the IP address! You will then see dialogs that will inform you of what is happening. Within one minute (normally 20 seconds) the IP setting will be finished, otherwise a timeout will occur. Upon success the AXIS IP Installer program will state that or when a failure occurs a dialog will let you know what went wrong. What the different error messages are (and means) can be seen further down in this readme file and in the Help file. After setting one IP address you can enter a new one, for another of your AXIS-servers, if you like. Click the "Close" button when you are finished setting IP addresses. Log file -------- In the same directory that AXIS IP Installer is installed there will be a logfile called "AXIS IP Installer.log". It can be used for diagnostics, eg for our support staff. The file is emptied at every restart of the program, but if you have a very heavy network load, plan to have the program running for many hours and have very little hard disk space left you might want to consider unchecking the log file checkbox. Technical information --------------------- The IP address is set using the protocols BOOTP and DHCP. However this is only temporarily (until restart of the AXIS-server), so afterwards the IP address is stored permanently using the protocols FTP or HTTP. If the IP address already exists or not is checked using the ICMP protocol.
